HoYoverse’s Honkai: Star Rail was launched on 26 April 2023 on PC and mobile, and surpassed 20 million downloads in a day, topping the App Store charts across multiple regions.
Even before the release, the game – which shares the same developer as the well-loved Genshin Impact – was expected to perform well with over 10 million pre-registrations.
Set in a science fiction fantasy world, the role-playing gacha game follows the player character “Trailblazer” – whose gender and name is picked by players – as they wake up in a space station with no memory of anything beforehand.
Just like Genshin Impact, the fourth installment in the Honkai series is expected to be a long-term development with major updates and new in-game content and features.
However, the numbers may be flattering the game. On Reddit, many players have mixed feelings. While some like it, some credit the popularity of Genshin Impact for the game’s record-breaking statistics.
Either way, many have found the game really funny and engaging. One of the biggest stories to come out of the launch was fans’ love for trash cans. Weird, but okay. Whatever floats your boat.
Whether players are enjoying the gameplay, storylines or just searching trash cans, the huge number of downloads make Honkai: Star Rail a success, for now. Will the numbers plummet? Well, how long can trash cans entertain you?
