China’s Dota 2 squad clinched the top prize in 2022 Asian Games‘ Dota 2 competition, securing a thrilling victory in the grand finals against Mongolia on Monday evening. Despite Mongolia’s valiant effort to make history, the star-studded Chinese team ultimately proved to be an insurmountable challenge.
The Chinese national team fielded a roster of legendary players, comprised of PSG.LGD’s icon, Wang “Ame” Chunyu, Azure Ray’s stars Lu “Somnus” Yao and Yang “Chalice” Shenyi, Xtreme Gaming’s Zhao “XinQ” Zixing, and Team Aster’s Yu “皮球” Yajun. They were guided by the expertise of EHOME’s legend, Zhang “LaNm” Zhicheng, who served as the head coach, and confidently beat formidable Southeast Asia sides, Thailand and Malaysia, which had advanced to the playoffs.
In contrast, the Mongolian team they faced was composed of members from IHC Esports, a team that only managed to secure 5th place in Division 2 of the Dota 2 Pro Circuit in Southeast Asia. However, they managed to overcome both Kazakhstan and the underdog team, Kyrgyzstan, securing their place in the grand finals
Carrying on their momentum, the Mongolian started strong and shocked China as they destroyed their base in just 40 minutes. They came close to victory in the following game as well when they effectively defended against Ame and had the Chinese team cornered during the midgame. However, the Chinese side patiently absorbed their attacks to give Ame’s Phantom Assassin enough time to complete crucial items. Eventually, they overturned their deficit and equalized in game two.
In the final game, Mongolia maintained their edge in a numerous team fights, but China’s sturdy defense ultimately left them at a disadvantageous position. As the match surpassed the one-hour mark, China’s late-game heroes finally proved their worth, leaving the Mongolian team unable to mount an effective fight. They secured the victory around the 65th minute, clinching the coveted gold medal.
Their victory put marked the 147th gold medal to its tally at the 2022 Asian Games, bringing the country’s total to 270 gold medals. Meanwhile, the Mongolian national Dota 2 team, as the runner-up, contributed a fourth silver medal to their country’s count, bringing it to a total of 11 silver medals. Lastly, Malaysia who defeated Kyrgyzstan claimed the bronze medal in the Dota 2 competition.
