News about Activision Blizzard, the company that was recently bought by Microsoft, has been making rounds as of late. While everyone is familiar with the likes of successful games such as World of Warcraft, Overwatch and Call of Duty, not many know that Blizzard is also the creator of the world’s most famous game: Candy Crush Saga.
Candy Crush Saga has a combined total of over 22,500 levels spanning three different versions of the game to date. Besides amassing challenges over time, the game has also accumulated many titles and articles to add to its portfolio.
Sound interesting? We thought so. We’re here to give you 5 more facts you might not know about the game.
- Khloé Kardashian x Candy Crush Saga
Did you know Khloé Kardashian was the face of esports at one point in time? Okay, not really; but she came real close with her Candy Crush Saga competition.
The event, officially named ‘Candy Crush All Stars Tournament’ was held just year ago, from September 23 to October 7. It was open to all America-based players who surpassed Level 25 of the game. The Finals premiered November 13 on the Candy Crush Saga Official YouTube channel, where the winner was eventually awarded a year-long supply of gold bars as their in-game currency.
A similar UK-version of the tournament was held in 2020 before being brought over to the US. Hopefully, we’ll be able to see more of the likes in Southeast Asia soon!
- Candy Crushers are Money Makers
We all know amassing a large following is mostly a good thing, more so when your fans and/or audience are the main contributors to your success.
Why? Because success almost always equals money.
According to Activision Blizzard’s third-quarter 2021 earning reports, the developers of Candy Crush Saga (and all its spin-offs) are cashing in USD$652 million over just a three-month period! If we’re the cash cows the company — now Microsoft — are milking, we’re not complaining; as long as it means more levels for us to play.
If we ever get through the ones we’re now at, that is. Admit it, we’re all stuck somewhere and can’t get past without those sweet boosters.
- Celebrities LOVE the game
Candy Crush Saga, or its spin-off — Candy Crush Friends Saga, saw many celebrities at its launch event in October 2018. From the likes of Vanessa Hudgens, Chloë Grace Moretz, Lil Jon and Evan Ross (pictured) to Emily Ratajkowski, Jackie Cruz, Justine Skye, Lil Jon and Ashlee Simpson, the company was the pinnacle of success.
While this happened four years ago now, we’d like to point out that the game still has multiple celebrity endorsements to date. This includes the aforementioned Khloé Kardashian Candy Crush All Stars Tournament and her commercial. Doja Cat also got in on this, filming one with the Kardashian and another on her own.
To say we can’t wait to see more of our favourite on-screen characters and off-screen celebrities play the game would be a severe understatement!
- 30-feet of sweet, sweet goodness
Bet you didn’t know Candy Crush Saga actually had a game show of the same name, huh? Well, it was technically called ‘Candy Crush’, but you get the point. With so many levels to clear on tiny devices like our phones or tablets, it was about time the developers pull out all the stops to create the largest television experience!
2017’s Candy Crush, spanning one season and hosted by Mario Lopez, was centred around teams of two players climbing, swinging and of course, matching candies as fast as they can through all the qualifying rounds. Every episode’s winning team won a whopping USD$100,000!
What’s even more fascinating is the fact that the game show actually won a Guinness World Record for constructing the largest touch-screen display at 30-feet tall (okay again, for technicalities’ sake: 20 feet, 4 and 11/16 inches wide by 25 feet, 9 and 1/16 inches tall). Can you say sweet?
- Candy Crush can take you to the moon
Although the app was launched way back in 2012, it is nowhere near becoming obsolete. As a matter of fact, there were so many people playing back then that the distance swiped in the game was enough to visit the moon and back 54 times!
Today, the number of people still playing any and/or all versions of Candy Crush Saga stands at a large number of 265,047,713 (monthly) and 13,252,386 (daily), according to the company’s live player count and statistics.
With the large pool of players and the seemingly ever-growing number of levels, it’s really no surprise that Candy Crush Saga is still reeling in millions of dollars yearly.
BONUS: Big Bad? No, Big Good!
Tapping on the celebrity support and endorsement, Candy Crush Saga also carved its name in the Hall of Fame, aka the Guinness World Records, again when multiple celebrities played the game on a 70-metre high projection screen on the side of Brookfield Place, New York.
This officially made it the largest game, literally, back in 2018. Way to go, King!
