Another esports world series is heading to Singapore – but this one will be armed with the biggest prize pool so far.
Free Fire World Series (FFWS) 2021 will be held in the city state in May, Garena announced on Friday (March 19).
The battle royale mobile game is one of the most popular games in Latin America and Asia, with more than 100 million daily players. The championship will have a prize pool of US$2 million (S$2.7 million), Free Fire’s largest purse so far. It is little wonder then, that the biggest teams in the world are heading to the Republic.
Singapore-based Garena said that the FFWS will feature the world’s top 22 teams from 14 international regions, and will kick-off on May 22nd. The final is expected to be held on May 29.
Garena added that teams will hail from the following countries and regions: Singapore, Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States, Europe, Middle East and North America (MENA), Latin America and Malaysia, Cambodia and the Philippines (MCP).
FFWS 2021 will be the third major tournament to come to Singapore’s shores this year.
In January, Singapore hosted the Mobile Legends Bang Bang M2 World Championship, which had a prize pool of US$300,000. In April, the DOTA 2 Singapore Major will see the game’s top teams vying for a US$500,000 prize purse.
The event, supported by the Singapore Tourism Board, is organised by a number of industry players including the Singapore Cybersports and Online Gaming Association (SCOGA).
SCOGA’s Co-founder Nicholas Khoo said on Linkedin that he was hyped about the event, adding that win “speaks volume of mobile esports and Singapore as a trusted place to host major events”.
